Our Actions

RHIS Survey

Eye on the Reef

Dive Spear and Sport is proud to be part of the Tourism Reef Protection Initiative, funded by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority as part of the Australian Government’s Reef Protection package.

So far, our team has submitted 374 Eye on the Reef surveys, 199 Photopoint images, and handled 206 pesky coral-eating critters. Our consistent data provides the Reef Authority with a timeline and accurate information of what is happening in our backyard. Arming them with the evidence of what environmental changes can do to our home. This valuable data can then be used to inform future resilience plans and management decisions.

What does this mean for you? Well, not only are we super reef-savvy, but this initiative equips our team with a deeper understanding of this World Heritage area. Armed with this knowledge, we are poised to impart a richer experience to our guests, ensuring they partake in the ultimate adventure through the wonders of the Southern Great Barrier Reef.

Operating Procedures

Dive Spear and Sport prides itself on its stringent environmental plan, ensuring eco-conscious operations at every turn. We adhere to a policy of not revisiting the same dive site more than twice in a week, minimising our impact on fragile reef ecosystems.
Additionally, we have established reporting procedures in place to address threats to the environment and suspected illegal activities, further safeguarding the reef’s health and integrity. As part of our commitment to marine conservation, we actively participate in ocean floor clean-up initiatives, removing rubbish to protect marine life and habitats.
Furthermore, Dive Spear & Sport plays a vital role in reef preservation by actively eliminating reef predators such as the drupella and Crown-of-Thorns Starfish (COTS), helping to maintain the delicate balance of the reef ecosystem. Through these proactive measures, we uphold our dedication to sustainability and the protection of the Southern Great Barrier Reef.

At Dive Spear and Sport, education is at the heart of our mission. We are dedicated to empowering our guests with a deeper understanding of reef health, marine life, and the intricate ecosystems of the Southern Great Barrier Reef.

Through engaging presentations, fun facts, and sobering realities, we provide comprehensive education on the impacts of fishing, climate change, human activities, and natural phenomena on reef ecosystems. We go beyond traditional diving experiences by offering hands-on opportunities for guests to participate in rapid monitoring surveys and contribute data to initiatives like the Eye on the Reef sightings app.

Our commitment to education extends to unique programs like “Be a Marine Biologist for the Day,” where guests can immerse themselves in the world of marine science alongside experts from the Reef Authority. At Dive Spear & Sport, we believe that informed guests are empowered advocates for reef conservation, ensuring a sustainable future for this precious natural treasure.
