SDI Scubility Buddy Diving Day Trips
SDI Scubility & Accessible Diving
The Ocean Should Be for Everyone
At Dive Spear and Sport, we believe the underwater world should be accessible to as many people as possible.
Scuba diving has the power to build confidence, create connections, improve wellbeing, and provide life-changing experiences. Through adaptive diving programs such as SDI Scubility, many people who may have previously thought diving was out of reach are discovering that the ocean can still be part of their story.
While we are not currently an SDI Scubility Training Centre and do not have a Scubility Instructor on staff, we are proud to have an SDI-certified Scubility Buddy as part of our team and are committed to supporting accessible diving wherever possible.
What is SDI Scubility?
Scubility is Scuba Diving International’s (SDI) adaptive diving program designed to make scuba diving more accessible to individuals living with physical disabilities, sensory impairments, certain medical conditions, or other challenges that may require additional support.
The program provides specialised training pathways, equipment adaptations, and support systems that allow participants to experience scuba diving safely while maintaining internationally recognised training standards. Scubility also provides training for dive professionals and buddies who assist adaptive divers both during training and recreational diving activities.
The goal is simple:
“To remove barriers wherever possible and create opportunities for more people to experience the underwater world.”
What is a Scubility Buddy?
A Scubility Buddy is a certified diver who has completed additional training to support adaptive divers both in and out of the water.
Training includes:
- Understanding adaptive diving techniques
- Equipment modifications
- Water entries and exits
- Communication strategies
- Assisting with buoyancy and positioning
- Supporting divers with varying physical abilities
A Scubility Buddy works alongside the diver and instructor to help create a safe and enjoyable diving experience. Dive Spear and Sport is proud to have an SDI-certified Scubility Buddy on our team.
Diving with Dive Spear and Sport
We welcome conversations with certified Scubility Divers and individuals interested in accessible diving opportunities. Because our operations take place in a remote offshore environment on the Southern Great Barrier Reef, participation is assessed on a case-by-case basis.
Factors we may need to consider include:
- Boat access and vessel layout
- Sea and weather conditions
- Physical assistance requirements
- Emergency management considerations
- Dive site conditions
- Availability of appropriately trained support personnel
While we will always do our best to explore options and provide honest advice, there may be circumstances where our offshore reef operations are not suitable for a particular diver or support requirement.
Our priority will always be safety, for both the individual diver and our team.
Let’s Start the Conversation
If you are a certified Scubility Diver, are currently undertaking Scubility training, or would simply like to discuss whether one of our experiences may be suitable for you, we would love to hear from you. Every diver’s journey is unique. The more information you can provide about your experience, certification level, support requirements, and goals, the better we can help determine whether we can safely accommodate your adventure on the Southern Great Barrier Reef.
Please contact our team before booking so we can discuss your individual circumstances and explore the options available.
Because everyone deserves the opportunity to connect with the ocean
